The fourth Dragon Ball Z movie was released in 1991 under the title This Is the Super Saiya-jin, Son Goku. Goku and Krillin use their powers to deflect a giant asteroid from striking the Earth. But the asteroid is really the ship of the evil Lord Slug, who bullies Gohan and Bulma to get the Dragon Balls and obtain the eternal youth he desires. The newly regenerated Slug begins to “terrafreeze” Earth, killing inhabitants and transforming the planet into a gargantuan space vessel. During their inevitable dul, Goku learns that the now-gigantic Lord Slug is the last member of a race of “super Namek-jins.” Goku eventually defeats him with some help from Gohan and Piccolo. This movie has a checkered history, having been chopped from its original 227-minute director’s cut to 139 minutes for its U.S. release. This longer edition benefits from having the complete story (the short version has huge gaps) about turn-of-the-century Jewish immigrants in America finding their way into lives of crime, as told in flashback by an aging Jewish gangster named Noodles (Robert De Niro). On the other hand, it’s almost four hours long, and this sometimes-indulgent Sergio Leone film is no Godfather. Still, it is notable for the contrast between Leone’s elegiac take on the gangster film and his occasional explosive action, as well as for the mix of the stoic, inexpressive De Niro and the hyperactive James Woods as his lifelong friend and rival. –Marshall Fine

Shock-talk TV host Jerry Springer makes his feature-film debut in Ringmaster and is, unfortunately, the least interesting aspect of this ragtag comedy that purports to be a behind-the-scenes look at the kind of people who regularly appear on his show. To be fair, Springer doesn’t have much to do except play the often-befuddled moderator. The only time he breaks loose is to defend his gusts’ right to air their dirty laundry on national television. But most of the juicy lines and situations are assigned to the competent cast of trailer-park denizens who pop in and out of each other’s beds and then go on TV to tell everyone about it. There’s a hair-pulling scene about every 10 minutes or so. But unlike the nationally televised syndicated program, there is also a great deal of real nudity and unbleeped profanity. There aren’t many surprises here, but the actors are amiable and attractive and don’t play down to their characters. For all its raunchiness, Ringmaster doesn’t have a mean bone in its body. The DVD is formatted in widescreen. Additional features include the film’s trailer, a music video, production information, and a commentary from the director, Neil Abramson. –Richard Natale

Based on an improbable but tru story, Cool Runnings concerns the Jamaican bobsled team that competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics. Director Jon Turteltaub (Phenomenon) does a fine job with both the absurdity of the situation (the athletes had never even seen snow) and the passion behind it (their desire to compete and win). John Candy, in one of his last roles, is touching as a disgraced coach who seizes the opportunity to work with the Jamaicans as a chance for redemption. The bobsled scenes look good, and the races are exciting. The climax, which is entirely unexpected, takes the film to a wholly different level, even if events in the story don’t quite match the facts. –Tom Keogh

With the surprise success–both critical and commercial–of Robocop, it was inevitable that a sequl would emerge (actually, two sequls). But this follow-up lacked the dyspeptically funny vision of filmmaker Paul Verhoeven and wound up skimming the surface to repeat only the most superficial elements of the original: the big, clunky hero (played by Peter Weller), the ultra-violence (minus a dark sense of humor), and the plethora of action sequnces. What plot there is deals with the corporation that runs the cops and its two-pronged attempt to sqUze every dime out of the populace and the city: create a new drug crisis (with an incredibly addictive synthetic drug the corporation manufactures, spread by a charismatic drug lord) and then attack with a bigger robot, one that eliminates Robocop at the same time.
